An Alternative Theory of Economics Essay Economics is usually defined as the problem of how best to distribute limited resources, limited because wants are characterised as unlimited, but common sense tells us that rather than limited resources, there is an abundance of resources. The difference is one of perspective and this is core to any alternative understanding of economics. If wants are the focus, then of course resources are limited by definition, but if minimum needs or essentials are used as the foundation, then resources are seen to be abundant. The difference is between a description and an explanation. A focus on wants or desires describes a market situation, while a focus on essentials or needs allows an explanation of choices to begin. It is necessary to shift the basis of economic theory away from assumptions of scarcity and onto that of the reality of high production if a rational explanation is to be found as to why certain activities are profitable and others, despite their desirability on social or moral grounds, are not. This begins with the understanding that an abundance of resources means that not all need to work productively and that some use more resources than others. Who shall be the lucky ones and how to keep the unlucky quiet is fundamental to the running of most economies. Abundance is therefore an economic problem because the choices opened up by having more resources than is strictly needed to live presents a danger to those processes of production and the command that some have over resources that created the abundance in the first place. Why does so much waste exists along side so much poverty in the world? The orthodox assumption of scarcity has survived even the staggering levels of surplus of modern economies because this assumption suits the needs of those who command resources and who prefer to ensure that the economy does not become democratised; that unpleasant tasks are done by someone else, that some win and many lose. An Economic theory based not on scarcity but on abundance is a theory that seeks not to describe distribution but to explain choices. The development of such a theory would undercut the dominance of those satisfied with the current methods of production and control over resources. It would do so by revealing the choices made to limit the production of essentials and to divert resources to the production of luxury and fashion goods. Twelfth Night Essay -- Literature, Shakespeare

In Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and in Molià ¨re’s The Imaginary Invalid, two ladies are presented, that are not necessarily the leading protagonist, but they help unravel the plays’ plots into something amazing. Twelfth Night features Maria, the lady in waiting to Olivia. At first Maria comes off as a dilettante, later on we find out that’s not the case at all. Meanwhile, in The Imaginary Invalid, there is the disputatious Toinette, who is the maidservant and nurse to the imaginary invalid himself, Argan. Maria and Toinette are two strong women characters, their strength and wit is depicted through Maria and Toinette’s deceiving schemes to make their plays more stimulating as well as their objectivity throughout all the chaos in their respective play. In addition, Maria plays the role of the lady in waiting who essentially doesn’t do anything for herself except take orders. Later on the reader soon realizes that, Maria is a strong witty character that takes matters in to her own hands. Maria developes a strategy, first she goes for the messed up drunken Sir Toby and her goal is to straighten him out. Maria confronts Sir Toby about his drunkenness, â€Å"That quaffing and drinking will undo you: I heard my lady talk of it yesterday† (1.3.128). Sir Toby begins to take notice in Maria. Maria begins to plot with Toby to bring down Malvolio (the condescending butler) as a practical joke. Through the process of plotting against Malvolio with Toby, Maria develops a back bone something she was not known for with Olivia. Maria took the lead in the plotting and Toby starts taking her orders, â€Å"Observe him, for the love of mockery, for I know this letter will make a contemplative idiot of him† (2.5.18-19) As a resul t of the jokes success, Mari... ...was depicted through her persistence to help aid Toby and eventually gain his approval as well as becoming his equal. Meanwhile, Toinette’s dependability is depicted through her selfless; as Argan’s nurse/maidservant and confidant to his daughter. And her quick wit that in the end allowed her to come up with a plan that would ultimately make that play the quirky comedy it is today. Thus, concluding that both Maria and Toinette are similar, because they are both strong character and quite witty, witty enough to change the total outcome of their respective plays. Hydroponics is the arming of vegetables using only water and loose fill media instead of soil. Aquaculture is the farming of fish in a controlled and sustainable environment. Putting these two systems together provides a source of nutrient rich water for growing plants and a natural filtration system, rich with oxygen, for growing fish.The combined system will be operated and monitored over a five year period to determine the total cost of production for a variety of leafy green vegetables as well as the price per pound of fish created over the same time period. The greatest price actor of getting food to local markets Is the fuel cost from the production location, through one or more levels of storage and packaging and lastly the trip to each point of sale. The system we propose to build would remove the fuel and transportation costs of a variety of vegetables that could easily be grown local to the market in which they are ultimately sold.Each certified organic occupations production facility could support the growth of several varieties of vegetables on a year round basis. This would allow local markets and restaurants the opportunity to provide locally grown organic produce and fish at reduced prices. Creating a system that is both self- sustaining and profitable is the key in the development of a solution that can be marketed. After the initial startup of a location, minimal financial input must be maintained while keeping the operational costs as low as possible to create a viable business model.

The Short Story Analysis Short stories can share themes, motifs, symbols, consequences, and plot lines, even if there is never any intention to share a common element between the stories. The stories can be written close together or in different decades and still be linked to the one another. They can also be worlds apart with different meanings in the end, but that does not stop them from having similar ideas expressed within them. The following three stories, â€Å"Lagoon† by Joseph Conrad, â€Å"The Rocking Horse Winner† by DH Lawrence, and â€Å"The Lady in the Looking Glass† by Virginia Woolf, are three totally different stories that share common threads that make them the stories that they are. â€Å"The Lady in the Looking Glass† is a simple,†¦show more content†¦But, poor devil, poor devil, hes best gone out of a life where he rides his rocking-horse to find a winner.† (Lawrence 15). This sentence shows the common thread of money cannot buy happiness or weal th is dangerous. Epiphany and an illusion of time is also present throughout this story. Thirdly, â€Å"Lagoon† is roughly a ten page short story where the character Tuan goes down the rivers of the Malay Peninsula. He ends up staying with an old friend who goes by the name Arsat. Arsat tells Tuan the story of how he and his wife came to be, but also of how he betrayed his own flesh and blood. His wife dies within the story and he is left alone and seeks revenge over his brother’s death. The last sentence of this particular story reads:â€Å"He stood lonely in the searching sunshine; and he looked beyond the great light of a cloudless day into the darkness of a world of illusions†(Conrad 10). This quote shows another common link of an epiphany, but also a common link of an illusion of time. This story also shows selfishness which all of the other stories carry as well. Firstly, the common link that is the most prominent in all three stories is a climax that results in an epiphany for a character of the story. â€Å"The Lady in the Looking Glass† shows its epiphany when she realises what the looking glass in her bedroom has done to her.
